GET TO KNOW
The Great Smoky Mountains
A part of the Appalachian Mountains, the breathtaking Smoky Mountains, or Smokies, stretch 72 miles along the Tennessee/North Carolina border. They are named so because of the haze from the moisture and organic compounds emitted by its abundant vegetation.
The Smoky Mountains are home to a vast number of diverse species of plants and wildlife, and is a part of “UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere Programme (MAB)/International Biosphere Reserve”. This helps ensure that proper actions are taken to protect the mountains’ ecosystem while still allowing the public to enjoy them.
Yearning for a fun vacation within driving distance? The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is withing a day’s drive from two-thirds of the country’s population. Established in 1934, the national park hosts over 12 million visitors per year. In fact, it is the most visited national park in the United States!
